Ocean Orchids, a tropical garden in Slovenia
Over two million vibrant orchids bloom in this greenhouse, creating a kaleidoscope of colour every single year.
It is a paradise for flower lovers, but there is a dilemma: choosing just one or more perfect colours to take home.
Honestly? I wanted to buy them all 🤩

The Ocean Orchids: a student dream and geothermal magic

Entrance to the Tropic Garden and an orchid paradise
The story of Ocean Orchids is about the dream and success of two friends and agronomists, Roman Ferenčak and Tomaž Jevšnik.
They founded the company in 2003, shortly after graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture in Ljubljana. They honed their knowledge and practical experience in the Netherlands, the European capital of horticulture, where they mastered the secrets of growing ornamental plants.
So, two friends decided to cultivate tropical orchids right in the middle of the Pannonian plains of Prekmurje. It was an ambitious project. Thanks to the thermal springs in this area, Roman and Tomaž drilled their first geothermal borehole in 2004. Since orchids require constant heat, they get it straight from the Earth.

The first greenhouse was built in 2005, covering an area of 1,4 hectare. They produced about half a million orchids per year.
Later, the production area was expanded, and today, the complex spans 4 hectares of modern greenhouses, where heating is entirely eco-friendly, powered exclusively by geothermal water pumped from a depth of 1,500 meters.
Air humidity in the greenhouse is 70-75%.

The seedlings are procured in the Netherlands, and it takes a whole year to reach the flowering stage. The production is continuous, and between 30,000 and 40,000 pieces are sold weekly, and the same number is planted weekly.
Around 4,000 new blossoms bloom in the greenhouses every single day, and more than two million orchids are produced annually. About 400,000 plants remain on the Slovenian market, while the rest are intended for export. A small quantity comes to Serbia as well.
The Phalaenopsis orchid at “Ocean Orchids”
Did you know that there are about 300,000 species of plants on the planet, and among them, about 30,000 species of orchids? By the way, the word “orchid” comes from the Ancient Greek word “órkhis”, which literally means “testicle” 😉
The Ocean Orchids, however, produce only one: the Phalaenopsis, originating from Indonesia.
Some orchids have a pronounced rest period, but the Phalaenopsis can grow continuously. It develops new leaves and roots, and with proper care, it can bloom for years, even in home conditions.
In nature, Phalaenopsis is an epiphytic plant. This means that it grows on the branches of trees in tropical forests, where its roots hang in the air to absorb atmospheric moisture while the canopy protects it from the direct midday sun.

Because of that, “Ocean Orchids” tries to imitate the conditions from nature: orchids are planted in a substrate made of tree bark, and rainwater is used for irrigation. The water that falls on the roof of the greenhouse is collected, stored in large tanks, and it is used again to water the plants. Also, too much light is not good for orchids. This is why they use shading systems in a greenhouse.
Definetely, it is not an easy job to raise the orchids…

Orchids colours
Usually, the Phalaenopsis is known as the elegant white orchid, but indeed, there are many different colours.
According to traditional and Feng Shui principles, the white Phalaenopsis orchid symbolises elegance, purity, innocence and peace, which is why it is the most common choice for gifts, weddings and festive occasions. Also, the white colour fits perfectly into any interior style, from modern and minimalist to classic.

The second best-selling are pink and cyclamen orchids.

Light pink Orchids
They symbolise grace, joy and femininity, so they are widely bought as a gift for Mother’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries. Purple orchids are a symbol of luxury and admiration.

Yellow orchids are very interesting and unusual.

Also, the orange orchids are amazing; they look unreal!

Blue orchids you see in flower shops attract a huge number of buyers. But the truth is that this colour does not exist in nature. Actually, these are ordinary white orchids that are artificially injected with blue ink through the stem. So, when they bloom again at your house, their flowers will be white 😉

Combinations of several colours on one flower are also interesting. The dots and stripes appear on the petals that contrast with the centre, which is why two orchids of the same basic colour can look completely different.

✨ Orchid care tips
♦ Too much water
The Orchid Phalaenopsis doesn’t like too much water. In nature, it is accustomed to alternating wet and dry periods. When it dries, it is possible to soak the plant well with water, and then return it to its place.
◊ Rainwater
At Ocean Orchids, rainwater is used for watering. Since most people do not have such an option at home, it is advised to let tap water stand for a day or two before watering.
♦ Too much light
Do not place orchids in strong sunlight. They prefer a bright place, but without direct midday sun. Windows facing east or west, with a curtain, are always a good choice.
◊ Temperature
Phalaenopsis does not like the cold. Temperature in the apartment should not fall below 14 degrees. At the same time, the plant can withstand temperatures of 30 degrees.
♦ Fertiliser
Be careful with fertilisation. In professional production, the amount of fertiliser is relatively small. Usually, salts that do not suit the plant can accumulate on the bark where the orchid grows.
And, at the end, love your orchids 😍

Stepping into the jungle: the Tropical Garden
The Tropical Garden is located next to the production areas and the shop. It covers 1,500 square meters and stands over 6 meters high. When you step into the warm, humid botanical garden, you forget that you are in Slovenia.
It was an interesting walk along the wooden pathways with a romantic waterfall and lush greenery.

There are more than 400 plant species and over 900 individual specimens of tropical and subtropical plants from all over the world inside. The beauty of the colourful flamingos (Anthurium) and other tropical flowers leaves you speechless 🤩

Bourbon Vanilla
Did you know that vanilla is a climbing species of orchid?
One of the highlights of the garden is an authentic Bourbon Vanilla from Madagascar.
Vanilla successfully bears fruit also in this Slovenian greenhouse, and during the spring and summer months, you can even sample priceless homemade vanilla ice cream made from its aromatic black pods right at the Tropical Garden.

In the Ocean Orchids Shop, you can buy colourful orchids and everything you need for their care. The only problem is how many to take and which colour to choose 🤩
Also, there are the Slovenian Potted Vanilla or the Vanillarium, a mini tropical and self-sustaining glass ecosystem.

📌How to get to the Ocean Orchids
Ocean Orchids is situated in the small village of Dobrovnik, in the northeastern tip of Slovenia, and very close to the Hungarian border.
Situated about 13 km from Moravske Toplice, this greenhouse can be an interesting day excursion between bathing and relaxing at Terme 3000. The best way to get there is by car.
From Ljubljana, it is an easy 2-hour drive (about 190 km), and from Zagreb, it takes less than 2 hours (around 130 km) via regional roads (bypass the motorway and skip buying a Slovenian vignette).
If you come from Belgrade or other parts of Serbia, the best way is to relax in the nearby Terme 3000 or in some other place, depending on your route in Slovenia.
Time to visit: every day, April – October: 9 AM to 6 PM; November – March: 9 AM to 5 PM.
P.S. Don’t mix the village of Dobrovnik with the town of Dubrovnik, in Croatia, as some people did 🤩
Orchids paradise
Ocean Orchids isn’t just a greenhouse. It’s a living, breathing paradise of exotic plants and colourful orchids.
As someone who adores orchids, I can say that I really enjoyed the tropical garden.
And of course, delicious vanilla ice cream in the cafe in front of the greenhouse😋
