Vila Planinka, mountain oasi in Jezersko
Jezersko is a picturesque small village nestled between the mountains and a green valley in northern Slovenia. The time slows down there, and together with Vila Planinka, it is a perfect place to escape the crowds and stressful moments.
This hidden gem is a place where you can breathe the fresh mountain air, listen to the birds and the murmur of the Kokra River winding through the valley, taste delicious food made from local ingredients, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings all year round.
Everything you need is there to reset your body and soul, and to forget about stress and all those must-do things 🤩

📌 How to get to Jezersko village
Jezersko is the first mountaineering village in Slovenia, situated at about 1,000 meters above sea level. With its crystal-clear Kokra River, it is surrounded by the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karawanks mountain range, in northern Slovenia and on the border with Austria.
This green paradise is a 60-minute drive from Ljubljana (approximately 50 km), and approximately 30 km away from Kranj.
The fastest way is by car, and regular buses run from Ljubljana to Kranj (Arriva Slovenia) to Jezersko.
From Belgrade, it is about 600 km away.
The best time for visiting Jezersko… hm, anytime. Winter is ideal for skiing and relaxing in silence, looking at the alpine peaks.
From Spring to Autumn is the best period for long walks, hiking, riding a bike, and enjoying the green landscape.

🏞️ A few words about the history
According to the first written documents, the first settlers arrived in 811, when a wooden chapel was built, a shelter for merchants and monks. In the 14th century, more people settled there to escape the deadly plague. The area got its name from the glacier lake, which started to disappear due to the terrible earthquake in 1348. It caused considerable damage to the houses.
The Turks invaded and destroyed the Jezersko valley in the 15th and 16th centuries. However, a disappearing lake became the land for agriculture. During the 17th and 18th centuries, along with their neighbours from Sočava, farmers started to raise sheep adapted to high mountain conditions, known as the Jezersko-Solčava breed. They also transported goods and were engaged in the wood business.
Tourism began to develop in 1900, when the Chech businessman built Češka koča, a mountain hut located at 1,543 m above sea level. Many locals started to rent beds soon, and other trades also started to develop.
The First World War caused a decline in business, but it developed again after the war. Interestingly, due to its healthy environment, there was a hospital for eye diseases, which attracted even more people. But, after the Second World War, the number of farms decreased, many people moved to Kranj, and the hospital for eye diseases was closed down in 1982.
During the last decade, the economic situation has improved. More young families have decided to stay in the valley. Today, approximately 600 residents live there, helping each other, while the accommodation and restaurant facilities use local products to prepare culinary dishes.

🍷Lunch time and Wine tasting
After the long walk in the unspoiled nature of Jezersko, we came back to Vila Planinka for lunch.
Well, it was the harmony of smells and tastes 🤩
Young chef Jernej Kamić and sous-chef Jure Koren Vodnik use local and organic ingredients to make specialities whose taste is unforgettable. The menu is available in several courses, including a vegan option. For example, a four-course tasting menu costs from 64 EUR to a seven-course menu that costs 100 EUR. Take a look at the carefully prepared menu here.
Even though you are not a hotel guest, you can enjoy their food with a prior reservation.

The interesting part of the degustation was the opening of bottles of Movia Puro Rosé, which stands on its head. Well, it requires a little skill, using a bottle opener specially designed by the Movia winery for opening sparkling wines.

By the way, the villa’s wine room is very impressive, featuring 250 wine labels from all nine wine-growing regions of Slovenia.

📍 What to do in Jezersko valley
There are many options for leisure activities regardless of the season.
Depending on your health and fitness level, there are various hiking and mountaineering organised tours, which can last from 2 to 4 hours, half a day or a full day.
Klemen from Hotel Vila Planinka was our guide on the walking route around Jezersko. And, step by step, we didn’t notice that we walked about 10 km! Well, it is not possible to describe the fifty shades of green forest, grass and meadows.
The amazing scenes of unspoiled nature took our breath away with every step while we walked around Zgornje Jezersko.

The Lake Planšar (Planšarsko jezero)
The landmark of Jezersko and the region is the little heart-shaped Lake Planšar.
Actually, it is an artificial lake made by local inhabitants in memory of a larger glacial lake that had drained away, and after which Jezersko got its name. Today, it is the most attractive tourist point in Jezersko.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk around the lake.

Beautiful Planšar Lake
This is a perfect spot for nature lovers who enjoy the view of the crystal-clear waters reflecting the stunning mountain peaks that frame the lake.

The lake is easily accessible by car, bike or motor, and the parking is available directly beside the lake. Take a break for coffee or lunch at the restaurant by the lake, Gostišče Jezersko, which also offers accommodation.

Find your place along the lake shore, spread out a blanket, and enjoy a picnic surrounded by tranquillity. In summer, you can rent a boat and enjoy the calm waters, and in winter, try ice-skating.

Ravenska Kočna Valley
An undemanding trail along the Jezernica stream through meadows led us to one of the most beautiful spots in the Ravenska Kočna Valley.
I have to admit that I couldn’t wait to see the scenic Ledenik pod Skuto, the easternmost glacier in the Alps and one of two in Slovenia. We admired it from afar, because the crossing it requires mountain experience.

🚲 Mountain bike adventure around Jezersko
Cyclists will also enjoy these scenes. There are mild routes that are perfect for families and recreationalists, while the more demanding ascents towards the mountain passes attract experienced cyclists.
If you are a guest of the Hotel Vila Planinka, you can take a conventional mountain bike for free or rent a high-quality electric bike (for a reasonable fee).
The part of our group took electric bikes, and led by Ana Tancik, the author of guided tours of Jezerski on an electric bicycle, had an unforgettable experience. Actually, mountain biking is one of the fastest-growing outdoor trends today.
Today, it is more available to families and even the elderly. Interestingly, more and more women are discovering the charms of mountain biking. It is not just a sport; it is an escape from everyday stress.
Note: always ride a bicycle with a helmet on, adjust the seat to the terrain, follow the instructions, and … fitness is still important 🙂

Forest yoga and mindfulness
The unique experience is Forest Yoga. Surrounded by trees and the fresh mountain air, the yoga teacher will help you to get in touch with your inner self and feel a connection with nature. The session lasts 90 minutes and is suitable for both beginners and those who practice yoga already.
During a walk through the forest, you can practice mindfulness. Focus on here and now, and relieve the stress caused by a modern lifestyle.
Winter time in Jezersko
During the winter, Jezersko transforms into a winter fairy tale.
You can go for a walk known as “Snowshoeing”, which is suitable for everyone. Also, you can try sledging on the snow-covered hills of Jezersko, accompanied by a VIP instructor, or go to the 15-kilometre-long cross-country skiing trail in the Ravenska Kočna Valley next to Lake Planšar.
And for the romantic souls: go for a walk, under the stars in the night sky in the serene valley, looking at the peaks of the Alps…
Culture and events
Various sports and cultural events are organised in the Jezersko valley, such as slalom skiing and ski races.
The Week of Tourist Farms, organised by the Association of Tourist Farms Slovenia and Jezersko Šenk’s Homestead, is being held from the 10th to the 19th April. You can try authentic homemade dishes and attend workshops showcasing wool processing.
One of the most important events is the Ovčarski bal, the oldest Slovenian Ethnographic event, which is held on the 9th of August, near the lake Planšar.
