Stepping into the Royal history of Rogaška Slatina

In the mid-19th century, Rogaška Slatina was a famous town, the playground of emperors and aristocrats. Besides the healing mineral water, it was an important social hotpot. High society came here for the atmosphere, the gossip, the architecture, and the daily rituals.

One of the symbols of that era was the Wandelbahn, a magnificent 70-meter-long covered promenade built in the 1840s. It had an elegant wooden structure with grand arches, Doric columns, and geometric ceilings. It was the place to see and be seen, lined with cosy benches, shops, and endless charm.

The Wandelbahn no longer exists. Today, Grand Hotel Donat Superior stands proudly in its place. Built in 1974, the hotel captures a completely different era: an ambitious wave of Yugoslavian modernist architecture, designed for the new tourism goals.

Luxurious style of the hotel’s suites

Recently, the Grand Donat Hotel Superior got a stunning modern upgrade, adding a brand-new sixth floor dedicated entirely to luxury living. There, you will find suites named after the famous Dante and Leonardo da Vinci. But the most famous among the luxurious suites are the two largest residences: Aleksander and Katarina.

These two separate suites can be connected if needed due to the common space between them. Food can also be served.

The Aleksander suite: a secret prince and 24-karat gold

The Aleksander suite 621 has a brilliant connection to local history. It is named after King Aleksander Karađorđević, who visited Rogaška Slatina in 1909 as a young prince. Because the region was under Austro-Hungarian rule at the time, he checked in under a brilliant incognito alias: “Comte d’Avala mit Kammerdiener aus Belgrad” (The Count of Avala).

At the nearby Anin Dvor Museum, you can see the largest collection of the Karađorđević dynasty in the world, as well as Aleksandar’s personal belongings.

The Aleksander Suite is a masterpiece of contemporary design. It spans 55 square meters, plus a massive 37-square-meter terrace overlooking the lush greenery of Zdraviliški Park and the surrounding hotels.

In the central part of the suite, there is a massive, plush double bed, framed by an elegant headboard and draped in fine silk linens.

 Everything is glamorous: glittering crystal chandeliers, warm beige and gold accents, and a stunning floor crafted from bright, polished marble tiles.

But the most spectacular part of the suite is the bathroom, with a marvellous monolithic bathtub carved from a single piece of Spanish Rojo Alicante marble, boasting a deep reddish hue with striking white veins.

The Katarina Suite

Right next door is the Katarina Suite 620, a similar but beautifully intimate space, perfect for romantic moments.

While the Aleksandar Suite represents royal grandeur, Katarina’s Suite feels like a woman’s elegant powder room with a lavish bath.

The suite has a 43 m2 living area, plus a 47 m2 spacious terrace with a panoramic view of the park and the centre of Rogaška Slatina. Luxurious details and a private Jacuzzi are also presented at Katarina Suite.
