Walking along its historic centre with narrow alleys, stone arches and houses, you have a feeling that time literally has stopped.
It is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (I Borghi più belli d’Italia).

Interestingly, Vico del Gargano is known as the “Village of Love” because of its patron, Saint Valentine. He is a protector of love and lovers, but also the protector of the citrus that grows in this area.

How to reach Vico del Gargano

Vico del Gargano is located on the hill, in the Gargano Peninsula, in the northern part of Puglia. It is 117 km away from Foggia, 12 km from Rodi Garganico, and 34 km from Vieste. The territory of Vico del Gargano extends from the Umbra Forest in the north, at 800 meters above sea level, to the bays of Calenella and Saint Menaio.

By plane:
The nearest airports are Bari (about 230 km away) and Pescara, known as Abruzzo, which is around 200 km away. From there, you can rent a car and drive approximately 2h and 30 min north toward Gargano.

By car:
The best way to visit the village is by car. From Bari, follow the A14 highway, exit at Poggio Imperiale, and continue along the Gargano coastal or inland roads. Park the car outside the old centre and continue on foot.

By bus:
There are regional buses connecting Foggia with Vico del Gargano, but they run infrequently.

By train:
The small Ferrovie del Gargano line connects nearby towns, but not directly to Vico, so you have to combine a train with a bus or taxi.

A few words about the history

Surrounded by pine trees, the territory of Vico del Gargano is rich in greenery and water. According to some traces, it was inhabited in prehistoric times. The rock necropolis of Monte Tabor dates back to the Iron Age, while the necropolis of Monte Pucci dates from the early Christian period.

Around 970, Sueripolo, the leader of the Croatian Slavs, in the service of the Byzantines, expelled the Saracens from the Gargano. He obtained permission to settle there with his people. So, Sueripolo united several hamlets within defensive walls, making a first urban core: the “Cività“. Later, it will be called Vicus, from the Latin word which means “a group of houses or a village”.

Then, in the 11th century, the Normans conquered this area, built a fortress and the defensive walls. The Emperor Frederick II of Swabia (1090-1147) modified the fortress, and the medieval settlement developed around it. Later, Vico was ruled by the various Angevin and Aragon families, and it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Today, Vico del Gargano belongs to the province of Foggia, and it has about 8,100 inhabitants.

What to see in Vico del Gargano

Our tour started from the Piazza Francesco, and we followed Via V. de Gagno and Corso Umberto streets.

Walking along, you can see the small Church of Our Lady of Mercy (Chiesa della Misericordia) from 1626, and the Church of Purgatory (Chiesa del Purgatorio) from 1677.

Going further, we came to the main square, Piazza San Domenico, where you can see the church, Chiesa di San Pietro e Paolo and the Town Hall. And, a few steps away, there is the historical centre of Vico del Gargano.

The Old Town (Centro Storico)

Centro Storico is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleys, stone houses, arches, and tiny passageways.

The historical Old Town consists of three connected Rioni (neighbourhoods): Cività, Terra, and Casale.

Rione Cività is considered the oldest and central historic district, located around the Castle Normanno.
In the 16th century, the village expanded, and the new Rione Terra neighbourhood was founded.

Rione Casale was developed between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, around the walls and surrounding the Cività and Terra.

Rione Cività and the Norman-Swabian-Aragonese Castle 

The Castle Normanno was built by the Normans in 1167, in a quadrangular shape. It was enlarged by Frederick II in 1240, while Teodisco de Cuneo, the master of crossbowmen and man-at-arms, built a boundary wall with about twenty circular and quadrangular towers in 1292. Also, the Aragons made some modifications.

The Castle dominates the old town, and from its top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the olive and citrus trees, the forest, and the sea.

Today, the castle and its walls are incorporated into the residential houses. In the castle courtyard, there is also a restaurant, Osteria Da Miki Il Federiciano, but it was closed during our visit (opening time: 12:30–2:30 PM, and from 8–11 PM)

The Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption (Chiesa Matrice)

Close to the castle, there is the church Chiesa Matrice, built in the 17th century. It has a simple facade, a quadrangular bell tower, and a red cupola.

Inside the church, there is a stone portal dated 1675, and a central nave with eleven altars. In the middle of the 18th century, it became the Collegiate Church. Chiesa Matrice is known for the relics of Saint Valentine, the city’s patron saint, which are carried in a traditional procession on the 14th February.

Museum: Museo “Trappeto Maratea”

At the foot of the Castello Normano, you can visit Museo “Trappeto Maratea”. It is a civic museum dedicated to the traditional agricultural systems of the Gargano.

For centuries, Vico del Gargano was famous for its olives and citrus fruits, thanks to its microclimate. Actually, there are numerous trappeti, the mills with olive presses in Puglia. According to documents, the oldest one dates back to 1318, located in Vico del Gargano, which is today the museum “Trappeto Maratea”.

By the way, trappeti were always built below street level because they needed a specific condition: a warm room with a constant temperature of around 14 degrees.

So, the objects in the museum show various stages of olive oil production, such as milling, pressing and filtering. It was hard work, usually called “Blood trappets”, because of the huge energy of men and animals necessary for the process.

First, the large grinding wheel was turned by the donkeys, which broke the fruits. There were four large Genovese wooden presses, in four niches carved in rock. So the olives were reduced to a paste by the millstones. Then, this mixture was poured onto the superimposed ‘friscole’ to get total pressing of the olives. Oil and water came out, and they were collected in oak vats placed at the foot of the presses.

Usually, the separation process was slow because of the natural separation of water and the oil, collected by skilled hands. After the oil was separated by decantation, it was recovered and stored in stone cisterns.

The museum collection also includes various tools, hoes, sickles, and the specific equipment used in traditional agriculture systems for citrus fruits, pears, vines, olives, almonds and chestnuts.

Despite the technological advances, the Maratea trappeto was used until the early 1950s.

The entrance is free, but you can leave a symbolic donation.

Rione Terra (Borgo Vecchio)

Wandering through the Rione Terra was fantastic. It is a medieval maze of small, cobbled streets, hidden courtyards, and stone arches that supported houses.

The stone houses have small terraces decorated with flowers, external carved stairways, and almost artistic chimneys that decorate their walls.

Almost everywhere, you can see the remains of old walls and towers incorporated into the residential houses. Interesting details are also the paintings on the house’s walls.

There you can find the Church Chiesa di San Giuseppe, built in the 17th century, and the 13th-century Church of San Marco.

By the way, we visited Vico del Gargano in the afternoon, during the siesta. The streets were almost empty, the shops were closed, and we felt as if we had wandered into an old Italian movie… We took a short break in La Vecchia Cantina (Via Ricciotti 5), a bar with red chairs and wooden benches, with a view of the houses situated in the tower.

The impressive palace, Il Palazzo della Bella, was built between 1908 and 1929 by Ignazio Della Bella from a noble Florentine family. The design of the palace was inspired by the famous Palazzo Vecchio, located in Florence.

The palace has two floors, two smaller circular towers and the majestic tower with the family coats of arms that dominates the building. We tried to come inside, but it is not open to the public.

Vico del Gargano, the “Village of Love”

Well, Saint Valentine is worldwide celebrated on the 14th of February. He is known as the patron of love and lovers, but for the citizens of Vico del Gargano, he is much more. Actually, in 1618, Saint Valentine was acclaimed Patron Saint of the city and its orange gardens.

For centuries, Vico del Gargano was known for its delicious oranges and lemons. At the beginning of the 17th century, winters were cold with strong frosts. The people cried for protection so that the fruit trees’ crops would not freeze. They were looking for the Saint who is celebrated in the winter, and they found Saint Valentine. But, according to the legend, the Saint chose Vico del Gargano.

So, during a traditional procession on the 14th of February, a statue of Saint Valentine is richly decorated with oranges and laurel leaves. From the Chiesa Matrice, the statue parades through the streets of Vico del Gargano.

Actually, the whole village of Vico del Gargano is decorated with oranges, laurel leaves, and red hearts! Houses, balconies, windows, shops, corridors, churches, everything is adorned with fragrant oranges, the symbol of prosperity.

In this ceremony, oranges and lemons are blessed and shared among locals and tourists. It is believed that eating blessed oranges and drinking orange juice ensures joy, love and happiness

In 2026, the festive program begins on Friday, the 13th of February and runs until the 15th of February.

Vicolo dei Baci 

The Village of Love (Il Paese dell’Amore) is also known for its Kissing Alley, or Vicolo dei Baci, located in the Rione Terra. Actually, it is a narrow alley only 50 cm wide, and less than 30 meters long!
It means that two people come into close contact in a passageway, which leads to a … kiss
According to tradition, couples who pass through it and kiss will have a lasting relationship, especially on Valentine’s Day.

And of course, Vico dei Baci became the popular spot for meetings and tourist photos.

Where to Eat in Vico del Gargano

Well, the cuisine of Vico Gargano is known for homemade orecchiette, grilled vegetables, cheeses, magliatello (kid meat), and fish.

But the traditional Apulian dish from Gargano, and specifically from Vico, is Paposcia Vichese. It is a stuffed, elongated focaccia bread, filled with local cheeses (caciocavallo), cured meats, tomato, vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, and oregano. So delicious! The modern version also includes seaweed, if you like it.

One of the most famous restaurants is Osteria Da Miki Il Federiciano, located in the Normano castle, and known for fresh pasta and local antipasti. Other popular places to enjoy Italian food are: Paposchia Bistrot, Cantina Il Trappeto, Masù, Radici, Nanì, Pizzeria Angolo, etc.

And something sweet…

Try the traditional Apulian sweet, Ostia Piena, a crunchy concoction of fruit, honey, almonds, and honey.

But the real surprise for me was the Capriccio pasticceria, with delicious small cakes, where you don’t know what to try first!

The typical sweet from Vico is Dolce della Sposa, also known as Dolci Sospiri, or Bride’s Sweet. It is a traditional white, dome-shaped pastry made of two hemispherical cakes, filled with cream and glazed with sugar icing. There is also Dolce dello Sposo, or Groom’s Cake, which is covered with chocolate. I tried both the bride’s and the groom’s pastries, and they are so good!

By the way, they are wedding cookies, and they are served at weddings. But, you don’t need to get married to enjoy these delicious cakes Hmmm, don’t ask me how many dolci I tried!

What to Buy in Vico del Gargano

I have to admit that recently, instead of classic souvenirs, I’ve been buying more and more various local products. And when I come home, the food and sweets remind me of all those wonderful places I’ve visited…

For example, regarding Vico del Gargano and Puglia, you can buy and take with you:
Fresh Arancia Bionda del Gargano, Limone Femminello del Gargano IGP, depending on the period of the year.
Citrus products, such as jams, liqueurs, or soap made from local oranges and lemons.
Olive oil, cold-pressed and fragrant, is a necessary part of every kitchen.
Local handmade pasta, cheese and wines.
And of course, handmade souvenirs and ceramics from small local artisans.

If you like to spend some time in Vico, you can choose between small hotels, guest houses and apartments, often family-run accommodations.

Generally, half a day is enough to visit it, and you can combine it with a visit to the nearby towns and beaches.

And honestly, who can resist the aroma of authentic Italian dishes paired with outstanding wines?

Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, 2025

The Week of Italian Cuisine in the World is one of the most inspiring international programs.

Launched in 2016 as a legacy of Expo Milan 2015, it has since grown into a true global celebration. Over 10,000 events have been organised across more than 100 countries, showcasing Italy’s culinary heritage through tastings, masterclasses, cooking shows, exhibitions, conferences, and business events.

In 2025, the Week of Italian Cuisine marks its 10th anniversary. This year’s theme, “Italian Cooking: Culture, Health and Innovation”, reflects the enduring values and contemporary evolution of Italian cuisine.

Italy has also submitted its world-famous cuisine for inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, with the decision expected in New Delhi from the 8th to 13th of December, 2025. To support the candidacy, famous artists Al Bano and Mogol created the official anthem “Vai Italia”, celebrating the emotional power and cultural beauty of Italian food.

Italian culture, gastronomy, and wine were also warmly celebrated in Serbia, where visitors had the opportunity to taste, learn, and immerse themselves in Italy’s culinary world.

The program in Serbia was officially presented at a press conference on the 17th November at the Palilula Market in Belgrade.

Luca Gori, the Ambassador of Italy to Serbia, introduced this year’s program through five key pillars: culture, solidarity, quality, togetherness, and professionalism.
The initiative is promoted by the Embassy of Italy in Belgrade, in cooperation with the ICE Belgrade Agency, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Chamber of Italian-Serbian Businessmen, Confindustria Serbia, and several Serbian companies.

After the press conference, the representatives and guests continued the gathering at the Figo restaurant in the market, where they enjoyed a tasting of exquisite Italian wines.

Culture events

The Week of Italian Cuisine opened on Monday, the 17th of November, with the exhibition “Mangiare con gli occhi” (“Eating with the Eyes”). Photographs celebrating Italian food were displayed in the hall of Palazzo Italia, at Kneza Miloša 56 in Belgrade.

Luca Gori, the Ambassador of Italy to Serbia, inaugurated the exhibition featuring works by four Italian artists who portrayed food in diverse and imaginative settings.

Luisa Valieri, one of Italy’s most renowned food photographers, showcased her dessert-themed photographs taken in front of Genoa’s historic palaces and charming streets.

Mauro Turatti presented artistic compositions of local ingredients with a gourmet twist, captured in the landscapes of various Italian regions.

The works of Francesco Rucci and Francesco Marinelli explored the idea of “Future Food”, blending gastronomy, nature, and emerging technologies.

The connection between Italian cuisine and cinema was highlighted with a free screening of the film “All the women of my life” (“Tutte le donne della mia vita“), directed by Simona Izzo. The film was shown on Tuesday, the 18th of November, at the Belgrade Youth Centre Cinema.

Several food-related events took place during the Week of Italian Cuisine, because food truly brings people together, doesn’t it?

Popular pizzerias, including Pietra, Crazy Pizza, Majstor i Margarita, and Giovanni’s, organised pizza-making workshops for young people from the Children’s Shelter, the Save the Children organisation, the Veljko Ramadanović School for Hearing Impaired Students and the Down Syndrome Association in Belgrade.

In cooperation with UNHCR Serbia and Chef Francesco Nikolai, a special dinner featuring Italian dishes was prepared by students of the Hospitality and Tourism School, together with young refugees living in Serbia.

The Chamber of Italian-Serbian Businessmen (CCIS) and the company La Strada delle Delizie organised an expert workshop dedicated to tasting the extra virgin olive oils.

Chefs Rosaria Napoli and Isabella Catalano also shared the secrets of Italian cuisine through a series of lectures held for students of the College of Hotel Management. One of their masterclasses, “Tastes of Sicily”, was dedicated to Serbian culinary professionals at the Metro HoReCa Centre.

Also, the company Shoppster Srbija, in collaboration with Confindustria Serbia, promoted Italian food, tableware and home appliances on its online platform during the Week of Italian Cuisine.

In cooperation with the Embassy of Italy in Belgrade and the company Domaća trgovina, ICE Belgrade Agency launched the promotional campaign “Sapori d’Italia” (Tastes of Italy).

The event officially opened on the 19th November at the Aroma Market in Savska 28, Belgrade.
Representatives of Italian and Serbian institutions attended the event, including Luca Gori, the Italian Ambassador, Antonio Ventresca, the director of the ICE Belgrade Agency, representatives of Domaća trgovina, and members of the media.

Guests and shoppers had the chance to taste authentic Italian products and specialities prepared by Chef Daniele Moretti, who arrived from Rome specifically for this occasion.

The campaign promoting authentic “Made in Italy” brands will run until the end of April 2026.

The second Italian Wine Night was held on the 20th of November at the Palilula Market, organised by the ICE Belgrade Agency, the Embassy of Italy in Belgrade, and JKP Beogradske pijace.

Visitors enjoyed a selection of exceptional Italian wines in the unique, authentic atmosphere of the Belgrade market hall.

Wine Vision by Open Balkan Fair 2025

The fourth edition of Wine Vision by Open Balkan, one of the largest wine and gastronomy fairs in Europe, took place from the 22nd to the 25th of November at the Belgrade Fair.

In collaboration with ICE Belgrade Agency, Vinitaly, and Verona Fiere, 67 Italian wine companies showcased their finest wines at the impressive Italian pavilion, spread over 1,000 m2, in Hall 2c.

Antonio Ventreska, the director of the ICE Office in Belgrade, emphasised that Italy remains the leading wine supplier in Serbia and continues to strengthen its position on the local market.

Visitors had the chance to taste wines from Italian regions, including Veneto, Apulia, Sardinia, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, and Abruzzo.

During the Wine Vision by Open Balkan fair, six Wine Masterclasses were held on the Italian pavilion. They were led by Dejan Živkoski, president of the Association of Sommeliers of Serbia (SERSA), who presented the wines of Italian producers.

Thanks to the invitation of ITA Belgrado, I had a great opportunity to enjoy the Masterclass held on the first day of the fair.

How to get to Monte Sant’Angelo 

Monte Sant’Angelo is located in the province of Foggia, in the region of Puglia, at an elevation of 843 meters. This area belongs to the Gargano Mount and the Gargano National Park. The town is also known as one of “The most beautiful villages in Italy” (Borghi più belli d’Italia).

The road to the town is winding and full of curves, so drive carefully. But the views of olive groves, limestone cliffs, the Adriatic Sea and the Gulf of Manfredonia are breathtaking.

By Car
The most convenient way to reach the town is by car. Follow the A14 Bologna/Taranto motorway, take the San Severo or Foggia exit and follow the signs for Monte Sant’Angelo.

By Bus
You can also take a bus from several Italian cities. Check the schedule of the Ferrovie del Gargano, which includes both bus and train routes.

By Train
Depending on your location, you can take a train to the Foggia station, then continue by bus or taxi to Monte Sant’Angelo.

By Plane

The nearest airport is Foggia “Gino Lisa” Airport (about 60 km), while Bari Airport is about 130 km away from the town. From there, you can take the bus of Ferrovie del Gargano or rent a car.

What to see in Monte Sant’Angelo 

Half a day is usually enough to explore the town. It is the highest inhabited settlement of the Gargano promontory.

Its narrow alleys are filled with white terraced houses, arches, tiny stairways, cafes, restaurants, and small shops selling local products and souvenirs. But let’s start with its most famous landmark, the Sanctuary of San Michele.

The history of Monte Sant’Angelo is inseparable from its sanctuary dedicated to San Michele (Saint Michael the Archangel).

According to legend, this sacred limestone cave was once a site of pagan worship in the Greek and Roman times.

Then, in the late 5th century, San Michele Arcangelo appeared three times, AD: in 490, 492, and 493 AD, shining in a flash of divine light. He instructed the Bishop of Siponto to dedicate the cave to  Christian worship, promising protection from invaders.
Each year, the apparition of San Michele is commemorated on the 8th of May.

Who is San Michele Arcangelo (Saint Michael)

By the way, San Michele is one of the seven archangels recognised by Christianity. He is the warrior of God in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
San Michele is the protector of the sick, paramedics, the Police Forces, sailors, and firemen. Also, he is the protector of the radiologists, pharmacists, pastry chefs, merchants, and swordsmen.

Today, he is the patron of many cities and towns, the Guardian of the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox, and the protector of the Jewish people.

Generally, San Michele is presented as an angelic warrior, armed with a helmet, sword, and shield. Sometimes, he defeats Satan in the form of a dragon or a serpent. A palm branch in the left hand symbolises the victory of good over evil. Depending on his role, he holds scales weighing souls on Judgement Day, or he has wings, looking like an angel.

Western churches celebrate the Feast of Saint Michael and the Archangels on the 29th of September. Most Eastern Orthodox churches (and those that use the Gregorian calendar) celebrate it on the 8th of November.

Those who follow the Julian calendar (such as in Serbia) celebrate it on the 21st of November. Also, in Serbia, it is one of the most popular family feasts, or “slava”, known as Arandjelovdan. Saint Michael was also the patron saint of the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty. And the capital Belgrade’s Orthodox cathedral, Saborna crkva, is dedicated to Archangel Michael.

Interestingly, the Coptic Churches celebrate him on the 12th of every month.

A few words about the history of the Sanctuary of San Michele 

The first sanctuary was founded in 493 above the cave where Saint Michele appeared for the first time.

Then, in the 7th century, the Gargano area and most parts of the Italian peninsula were conquered by the Lombards, a Germanic tribe. Over time, the cult of San Michele grew, and the sanctuary became a major spiritual centre among the Lombards and the entire Western world. Because of them, the sanctuary is one of the seven groups of historic sites included in the World Heritage Site “Longobards in Italy. Places of the power (568 – 774 AD)“.

After the fall of the Lombard Kingdom in 774 and later the Duchy of Benevento, the sanctuary was damaged due to several Saracen attacks between the late 9th and early 10th centuries. Then, it was under the rule of the Byzantines, the Normans, the Swabians and the Angevins.

In the 17th century, Monte Sant’Angelo became part of the Kingdom of Naples, and later, in 1861, it belonged to the Kingdom of Italy.

The complex of the Sanctuary of Saint Michele was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

The main entrance to the sanctuary is located on Via Reale Basilica, in the historic heart of the town.

The complex of San Michele Arcangelo underwent a major transformation and restoration in the 13th century by Charles I of Anjou. He also rebuilt a bell tower located near the sanctuary in 1282. Originally, it was built by Frederick II as a watchtower. Once, it was 40 meters high, but its current height is 27 meters. The bell tower has four levels and six bells, and the largest one dates back to 1666. 

By the way, the sanctuary was under the special protection of Angevin rulers.

We passed through a small courtyard (the “Upper Atrium”) and entered the double-arcaded gateway. Originally built in the 14th century, it was modified several times, including its current shape from 1865.

The marble stairway from the 13th century leads down to the grotto of the sanctuary. There are 86 steps divided into five levels, decorated with statues, votive offerings and various inscriptions.

At the end of the staircase, we passed through the portal known as “Bull’s Gate” (marked by the large fresco above it) and entered the Lower Atrium. On the left side, there is an entrance to the museum, and a small courtyard with old sarcophagi and Lombard crypts is on the right side.

Finally, we came to a large marble portal, the entrance to the sacred Grotta di San Michele. Its bronze doors were crafted in Constantinople in 1076 and donated by a wealthy noble family from Amalfi. They are adorned with 24 panels, with scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

Well, the cave is breathtaking. The Angevin Nave is interwoven with the ceiling of the cave.

On the right side, you can see the Baroque-style altar placed in 1690, which houses the Blessed Sacrament. Three stone statues represent Saint Nicholas of Bari (left), Saint Joseph (centre), and Saint Anthony of Padua (right).

On the left side of the presbytery, there is an altar dedicated to the Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of Perpetual Help). It is surrounded by four marble columns. Above the altar, you can see a framed fresco from the 17th century, with the image of Madonna del Soccorso, Saint Stephen the First Martyr and Saint Carlo Borromeo.

Behind this altar, there is a small inlet in the rock, known as Pozzetto or the Stilla. It is a “little well” where the pilgrims collected healing water.

The most sacred spot is the altar of San Michele, with its white marble statue, placed in 1507.

Pilgrims, numerous popes, including Saint Francis of Assisi, John XXIII, and John Paul II, kings, emperors, and sovereigns have visited this sanctuary. It became one of Christianity’s main pilgrimage destinations.

There is an interesting story about the small white stones from the sanctuary, which represent a unique reliquary.

In 1656, a terrible plague was in Italy. The local Bishop of Gargano prayed to Saint Michael for help for the people. The Archangel appeared and instructed him to bless the grotto’s stones. So, “Anyone who devotedly keeps these stones with him will be immune to the plague.”

According to legend, those who carried the blessed stones were protected from the plague. Others, who were sick, have recovered miraculously.

Since then, the small white stones have been distributed to protect the people from sickness, Satan and evil, as well. The distribution is strictly regulated, and it is possible to have only tiny fragments of white stones. Today, pilgrims and visitors can buy them in small medallions at the sanctuary museum (around 7 EUR). Larger stones are extremely rare, used by bishops and abbots.

Bear in mind that the stones are not magical. They are meant to serve as a spiritual connection with divine energy, God and the cult of San Michele, strengthened by one’s own prayers…

Tips for visiting the Sanctuary 

 The sanctuary is an active place of worship. So, cover your shoulders and knees when entering the sacred grotto.

◊ The best times to visit the sanctuary is spring and autumn, as the weather is nice, and the crowds are not as overwhelming. The annual feast of Saint Michael is on the 29th of September. It is a special event with procession, music, and celebrations. 

Entrance is free, and the price of the ticket for the museum costs a few euros.
Opening hours: from April to October,  7:30 AM to 7 PM, from November to March, 7:30 AM to 6 PM.
You can buy various religious items, guides, and books in the souvenir shop.

The Sacred Line of Saint Michael

Hm, there is something mysterious and interesting about the Sacred Line of Saint Michael.
In fact, it represents a perfect straight line connecting seven shrines dedicated to the holy Archangel Michael, stretching from Ireland to Israel. Each of these monasteries is nestled in remote places such as cliffs, mountains or islands.

Sometimes, this line is called “The Sword of Saint Michael”. It represents the sword strike of Saint Michael, cutting through darkness and guiding light across the world.

I found this sacred alignment truly fascinating. So let me share a few details about these seven remarkable places.

 1. The Monastery of Skellig
The Sacred Line of San Michele starts from this shrine. It is located on the southwestern coast of Ireland, on the small, remote islet of Skellig Michael.

2. St. Michael’s Mount Abbey
The second shrine is situated on a tidal island in Cornwall, southwest England. It is connected to the town of Marazion by a causeway of granite setts, passable only between mid-tide and low water. The present church was rebuilt in the late 14th century.

3. The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel
Probably, it is the most famous abbey of San Michele, built on a tidal island in Normandy, France. The architecture looks amazing, and it has become a tourist and spiritual landmark of the country.

4. The Sacred of Saint Michael the Archangel
This sanctuary is nestled in Piedmont, close to the town of Turin in Italy, at a height of 962 m on Mount Pirchiriano. By the way, it served as inspiration for the famous Umberto Eco’s novel “The Name of the Rose”. I am sure that you are also familiar with the film.

5. The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo
It is the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michele, located in Monte Sant’Angelo, in Puglia.

6. The Monastery of St. Michael Archangel of Panormitis
This Orthodox monastery is situated on the Greek island of Symi, in the Dodecanese archipelago. It is famous for the 2 m high, silver-leafed wall icon of San Michele, which miraculously appeared.
We visited it during our vacation on Rhodes Island in 2023. You can read more about it in one of my next posts.

7. The Stella Maris Monastery on Mount Carmel
And the last shrine is located in Israel, on Mount Carmel, near the town of Haifa. By the way, Mount Carmel is considered the place where the prophet Elijah lived.

The town of Monte Sant’Angelo was founded in the 11th century, after the arrival of the Normans. They built the castle, which was expanded over the centuries by Swabian and Aragonese rulers.

The oldest part of the castle is Torre dei Giganti (“Giants’ Tower”), dating back to 979. It is a pentagonal tower 18 m high, with walls 3.7 m thick. Later, it was the residence of several Norman conquerors, while the Swabian Emperor Frederick II restored it and used it as a residence for his mistress, Countess Bianca Lancia. According to legend, the castle is still home to her ghost, whose sighs can be heard especially in the winter nights…

During the Angevin rule, the castle was used mainly as a prison. In the late 15th century, it was rebuilt by Ferdinand I, King of Naples. Over the centuries, the castle was under various rulers until 1907, when it was purchased by the City of Monte Sant’Angelo.

Opening time of the castle: Monday-Sunday, 10 AM – 1 PM / 2:30 PM – 7 PM.
The ticket costs 4 EUR for adults.
From its top, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Gargano mountains, the town and the Adriatic coast.

As we went down from the castle, we walked into Via Castello.

It is an interesting street lined with white houses and small shops selling local products and souvenirs.

At the end of the street, you can find the Sanctuary of San Michele and Ruone Junno, the old part of the town.

Also, there you can see the beautiful Palazzo dei Grimaldi, the historic residence of the noble feudal family from Genoa. This baroque palace was built in 1750 for Maria Teresa Grimaldi, the Princess of Gerace. In 1802, the palace and the feudal land were purchased by the University, and it became the first seat of the municipality of Monte Sant’Angelo. Even ruined, it still looks amazing.

Rione Junno

The medieval quarter of Rione Junno is a labyrinth of cobbled alleys, arches, and whitewashed homes with small terraces and flowers. Walking through its alleys, we had a feeling that we were travelling back in time.

Also, you can visit the Tancredi Ethnographic Museum to learn more about old traditions, culture, crafts, and the daily life of Monte Sant’Angelo’s inhabitants. It is located in the former Franciscan Convent.

Close to the sanctuary, there is the second most important pilgrimage site in the town. It is the Complex of San Pietro, which consists of three significant buildings.

The Church of San Pietro was partially demolished in 1891. Today, the ruins of granite columns and apse structure from the 12th century can still be seen.

On the left side of the apse, there is an entrance to the Baptistery of San Giovanni. It is also known as the “Tomb of Rothari”, because it is believed that the tomb of the Lombard King Rothari (606-652) was inside. Actually, there is no evidence about it. Probably, the name “Tomba” was given due to a misinterpretation of the word “tumba,” meaning dome.

On the right side, there is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Cathedral of the town. It dates back to the 11th century, built in the Romanesque-Pugliese style. Its walls are decorated with frescoes depicting angels, saints, and San Michele Arcangelo.

Going further, we walked along Via Garibaldi, a street filled with old palaces, beautiful houses, and small shops with local products. We took a short break for a delicious cappuccino in the Café Leko on the Piazza Belvedere.

From the nearby public park, Villa Communale, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the town, the blue sea, and the Gulf of Mandredonia.

   Cafés, restaurants, and local products

Depending on your time, try delicious local dishes in the popular restaurants. Some of them are Li Jalantuùmene, Pizzeria Il Boccone, Borgo Antico, Osteria del Corso, Profumo-Osteria del Gargano, Al Battistero, Ristorante Medioevo, Cibus…

One of the typical local products is bread, in a rounded shape, with an average diameter of 20 to 100 cm, and a weight between 0.5 kg to 8 kg.
Other local products, such as cheese, handmade pasta, olive oil, taralli crackers, almonds, and wines, are also excellent souvenirs to bring home.

The sanctuary in Monte Sant’Angelo is known as the “Celestial Basilica” because it is the only Christian church not consecrated by human hands. In fact, the whole town radiates peace, serenity, and a special spiritual energy.

Around Monte Sant’Angelo, you can also visit some interesting places.

  Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano is located 8 km from the city. It was built in 591 over a Pagan temple, and it was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1646.
◊ The sanctuary of Saint Padre Pio is situated in the town of San Giovanni Rotondo, about 20 km away.
Umbra Forest is a protected natural area located in the Gargano National Park. 
◊ Amazing towns with authentic style, such as Manfredonia, Mattinata, Vico del Gargano, Cagnano Varano or Vieste.

Whether you are a history lover, a pilgrim, or simply a curious traveller, I am sure that you will enjoy Monte Sant’Angelo. It is a place where history, faith, and prayers are interwined under the spirit of San Michele, the warrior of God, protector, and Prince of the Angels.

How to get to Monopoli

Monopoli is located in Southern Italy, in the region of Puglia, and it lies on the Adriatic Sea. Administratively, it belongs to the Metropolitan City of Bari.

By car:
The best way to reach Monopoli is by car. If you are already in Puglia, follow the SS16 coastal highway directly to Monopoli.
By the way, the road distance from Monopoli to Bari is 45 km, to Polignano a Mare is about 10 km, to Alberobello is 22 km, to Martina Franca is 33 km, and to Ostuni is about 42 km. There is a parking lot close to the old town.

By bus and train:
Monopoli is connected with bus lines to the nearby towns. Check the schedule of the public service Ferrovie del Sud Est e Servizi Automobilistici S.r.l., for buses and trains.
Another option is organised excursions by bus with local agencies.

By air:
The nearest airports are Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport (about 50 km away) and Brindisi (about 75 km away). From airports, you can rent a car or take regional buses and trains. By the way, Bari and Brindisi are very important seaports, which means that you can come there by various ferry lines.

Best time to visit

As in many destinations, the best time for a visit is late spring to early autumn: May, June, and September.
In the summer, it can be very crowded. There are various events, concerts and festivals, perfect to feel the vibrant atmosphere of the town. Check the program of Monopoli events here.

A few words about the history of Monopoli 

The area around Monopoli dates back to prehistoric times. The first permanent settlement was founded by Greeks in about 500 BC. It was a fortified Messapian city. Greeks named the town the “Monos Polis”, which means “only city” because of its strategic position.

The history of the town was very turbulent. In 266, it was conquered by the Romans. By the way, the Roman Emperor Trajan ordered the construction of the Via Traiana between 108 and 110 AD. It was one of the most important Roman roads of the Empire, and Monopoli had the longest stretch of this road.

After the Romans, it was under the rule of the Goths, Byzantines, Normans, and Swabians. Later, it was ruled by the feudal families of Angevin and Aragonese.
From the 15th century, the Venetians occupied the town. In the following century, Monopoli became a prosperous town and maritime port. Because of frequent attacks by Muslim pirates, strong fortifications were built in 1529. Then, the town was ruled by the Spanish and Charles V, but with a free city status. During the Middle Ages, Monopoli became an important commercial centre.

Monopoli became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

Today, Monopoli is home to around 50,000 inhabitants. It became a popular tourist destination, as well as an agricultural and industrial centre.

What to see in Monopoli

Explore the Old Town (Centro Storico)

Strolling along the streets of Monopoli looks like you’re stepping into history. Cobbled alleys, stone houses and churches, palaces and a seaport with fishermen’s boats are interwined with small boutique hotels, shops, bars and restaurants.

We started our Monopoli tour by walking through the public park Villa Comunale Cala Fontanelle.
The park was constructed between 1915 and 1919. In the middle of the park, there is the first city fountain, built in 1926.

We passed by the church, Chiesa di San Francesco Assisi, and the square Largo Plebiscito, with beautiful buildings.

From the Largo Plebiscito, we came to the street Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, the tourist pedestrian zone. It was a pleasant walk along the white stone houses with green window shutters, bars, restaurants, and various shops selling local products and souvenirs.

Like in many towns in Italy, the main square got its name after the famous Italian general and revolutionary, Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The square dates back to the 11th century, when the Normans came. Once, it was Piazza delle Mercanzie (public marketplace).

Today, this charming square is filled with cafes, restaurants, and gelateries. In a word, it is a perfect spot to take a break, relax, and enjoy Italian coffee, delicious gelato or Aperol Spritz.

A few important buildings can be seen even today, such as Palazzo Rendella, built in the 1840s. Once, it was a Spanish prison, then a theatre until 1956, and today it is the municipal library. And the former Palazzo dei Gesuiti is now a residential building.

The landmark of the square is the Clock Tower (Torre Civica). Besides the clock, there is the coat of arms of Monopoli (three white roses on a red background) and a statue of San Gennaro (St Januarius).

Also, the part of the tower is a stone pillar, “Colonna infame” or “Infamous Column”, which dates back to 1552. It was used as a column where wrongdoers were publicly punished.

Close to the Piazza Garibaldi, there is another important building, the Palazzo Palmieri, on the square of the same name. This baroque palace of one of the most powerful noble families Palmieri, was built in the 18th century. The palace stayed in their ownership until 1921. Today, it houses various events and exhibitions.

Walking along the Porto street, you will find L’Arco del Porto, an iconic archway from the 15th century. It marks the entrance to the old harbour.

The Porto Antico (Old Port) is one of the most photographed spots in Monopoli.

The picturesque old port is surrounded by stone buildings and walls. The beautiful Palazzo Martinelli – Meo Evoli Palace will certainly grab your attention. It was built in the 18^th century. The white loggia has eight arches, and it overlooks the sea.

Even today, the port with its vibrant waterfront is the heart of Monopoli’s old town and a popular tourist spot.

Castello Carlo V (Castle of Charles V)

Impressive Monopoli Castle, also known as the Castle of Charles V, is located on a promontory near the old port, overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

The castle was constructed in 1552 under the directive of Emperor Charles V, as part of a coastal defence system, to protect the town from pirates and the Ottoman fleets. It has a pentagonal form (typical for Spanish fortresses) with two main floors and a mid-level, used for storage.

The castle was used for various purposes, such as a military garrison and a prison, until 1969. Since the last renovation in 1998, it has hosted various cultural events and art exhibitions. From the castle, there is a beautiful panoramic view of the sea and town.

Take a walk along Lungomare Santa Maria. It is a seafront promenade which stretches from the castle and along the 16th-century fortified walls of the old town. You can find several cafes and restaurants there, as well as the Bastion of Santa Maria and the Church of San Salvatore.

Churches in Monopoli

Monopoli is known for its medieval churches. There are 19 churches in the old town, but the most beautiful among them is the Monopoli Cathedral.

In a word, this cathedral takes your breath away with its impressive Baroque façade and interior. The bell tower is fantastically carved, and it is visible from various points in the old town.

Entrance to the cathedral is free. Opening hours are from 8.30 AM to 12 PM, and from 4 PM to 8 PM.
The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Since 1986, it has had the status of a co-cathedral in the Diocese of Conversano-Monopoli.

Next to the church, you can see a huge wall adorned with a clock and ten statues of Saints.

Near the cathedral, you can visit the Diocesan Museum, which contains sacred vestments, religious artefacts, and historical documents.

Maria Santissima della Madia, the Saint-protector of Monopoli

According to the legend, the construction of the first church started to be built in 1107, near the former Roman temple. The building was stopped because of the lack of money. But a miracle happened on the night of 16th December in 1117. A barge with 31 massive timber logs appeared in the harbour, together with the wooden icon of the Madia. These raft beams were used to finish the cathedral roof, and the icon was brought to the cathedral.

Later, the old church was demolished, and the new church was built between 1742 and 1772.

 The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated, from top to bottom, in marble in hues of red, green and yellow.

You can access the first floor by stairs, which is also decorated with marble and features various paintings.

There, you can see the chapel with a sacred icon and the altar of Maria Santissima della Madia.
The icon was crowned with a decree from Pope Clement XIII in 1770.

By the way, inside the cathedral, we saw several restored canvases made by Michelangelo Signorile, a painter from Bari. They were commissioned by the Bishop in 1732 and paid 30 ducats each. These oil canvases illustrate the local legend of the arrival of a Byzantine icon.

Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio

Close to the Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia, there is the church Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio.
It is also known as the Church of Purgatory, and it was built in the 17th century.

The wooden entrance door looks a little bit unusual because of the two carved skulls and skeletons on it. In a word, the church is dedicated to the passage from life to death, symbolising mortality and the need for spiritual reflection.

Inside the church, there is a small room with eight mummies dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. They were the founding members of the church and local administrators. You can see them in the glass display cases, dressed in black robes.

Opening time: Monday-Sunday, from 5 PM to 9 PM.

Church Chiesa di Santo Vitus Martyr

The Church is a small private chapel of the Del Lago family, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Surrounded by plants and flowers, it looks like time has stopped there.

The Church of St Francis of Assisi – Chiesa di San Francesco Assisi

This church is located on the square, Largo Plebiscito. It was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style, on the place of the former small church.

The church was designed by the architect Michele Colangiuli of Acquaviva, and it was completed around 1749.  The interior is beautiful, painted in white and light blue colours.

A few interesting churches in the old town…

◊ Chiesa Santa Maria Amalfitana
According to legend, this small church was founded by sailors from Amalfi in the 12th century. They found refuge in a cave after they survived a storm and a shipwreck. The church is located at the square Largo Amalfitana.

The 18th-century Chiesa di Santa Teresa and the Chiesa di San Pietro, which dates back to the 12th century, are located at the Palmieri Square, close to the Palazzo Palmieri.

◊ Chiesetta di San Giovanni is located in Largo San Giovanni. This chapel dates back to the 15th century, and it belonged to the Hospitallers of Jerusalem (the Knights of Malta). It was rebuilt in 1707.

Chiesa di San Salvatore is one of the oldest churches in Monopoli, dating back to 313 AD. It is located in Lungomare Santa Maria, overlooking the sea.

Beaches near Monopoli

There are many beaches around Monopoli, and several small beaches close to the old town of Monopoli, as well. Depending on your available time, you can combine sightseeing and some time on the beach.

Cala Porta Vecchia is the most popular beach, located beside the old city walls. It is a small beach and usually, very crowded during the summer.
In a short distance, there are Cala Porto Rosso, Cala Paradiso, and Cala Porto Nero. Lido Santo Stefano is located near the medieval Abbey of Santo Stefano. It is a sandy, well-organised beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, a restaurant and various facilities.

There are many bars, cafes and restaurants with delicious Puglian dishes around Monopoli.

Some of the popular restaurants are: La Locanda sul Porto (fish and local specialities), Coppino Monopoli, My Wine Il Piacere del Palato, Almerea-Osteria di mare, Ristorante Piazza Palmieri, Osteria Perricci, and Garibaldi Steakhouse.
Try grilled seafood, octopus, or fish; orecchiette alle cime di rapa (pasta with turnip tops); focaccia barese; pizza; or panzerotti.

If you don’t have a lot of time, grab various sandwiches from Gustavo Salumeria (Via Porto, 2) or Manunpasta (Via Comes, angle with Via Porto). They are so delicious, and the prices are affordable.

Take a break for a cappuccino, an Aperol Spritz or gelato at the Piazza Garibaldi, or somewhere in the old town.
And enjoy the tastes of Fuglia!

Walking along Monopoli’s old town, you can find small artisan shops with various items, handmade ceramics, linen clothes or jewellery.
And of course, the bottle of Puglia wine, local olive oil or cheese are perfect gifts for your beloved or for yourself

This amazing place is located in the Italian region of Puglia. It is known for its historic centre with concentric rings of white houses, and excellent white wines.

How to get to Locorotondo

Locorotondo is situated on a 400-meter-high hill on the plateau called “Murgia dei Trulli”, in the heart of the Valle d’Itria in Puglia. Administratively, it belongs to the Metropolitan City of Bari. You can reach it in several ways.

By car
The most convenient way to reach it is by car. The road distance from Locorotondo to Bari is 68 km, to Alberobello is 10 km, to Martina Franca is approximately 6 km, and to Ostuni is about 28 km.

By bus
The cheapest way to go is by bus, depending on your departure point, with Flixbus and ITABUS lines.

By Train
The regional Ferrovie Sud Est train line connects Locorotondo with Bari and neighbouring towns. The train station is located on the edge of town, and then, walk uphill to the centre.

By Plane
The nearest airports are in Bari and Brindisi, which are also important seaports. Then, you can rent a car, book a private transfer, or catch a train or bus.

We visited Locorotondo during an excursion organised by the travel agency “Mayak Tours“, during our trip around the Puglia region.

A few words about the history of Locorotondo

Locorotondo dates back to ancient times, according to archaeological finds dating between the 3rd and 7th centuries BC.

The town which we can see today was founded around 1000 AD. It was an unfortified hamlet under the jurisdiction of the Benedictine monastery of Santo Stefano in Monopoli.

For about 500 years, this area was under the rule of various feudal families. The last one, the Caracciolo family, was one of the most important families in the history of the Kingdom of Naples, and they ruled until the beginning of the 19th century.

During the medieval period, Locorotondo developed, and the castle and walls were constructed. The agricultural sector flourished, especially the production of wine and olive oil, and it continues even today, due to fertile land and its climate.

Over the last few decades, Locorotondo has become a very popular tourist destination. Today, about 14,000 inhabitants live in the town.

What to see in stunning Locorotondo

Locorotondo is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and white trulli with a communal area known as “jazzile”.

Along the road from Locorotondo to San Marco, there is the oldest trullo in the valley, Trullo di Marziolla. It is believed that the trullo dates back to 1559 (imprinted near the entrance). Even though many trulli are restored for tourism, this trullo remains in its original form.

Generally, half a day is enough to explore Locorotondo because it is a small town.
You can combine your trip with visiting nearby towns, such as Alberobello, Monopoli, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Polignano a Mare, Ostuni, or the Castellana Caves. For example, we visited Alberobello, Locorotondo and Monopoli in one day.

Centro Storico is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets, filled with whitewashed houses, flowers on terraces, small cafés, restaurants, and craft shops.

Its characteristic houses are known as “Le Cummerse“. They have regular geometric shapes and sloping roofs made of black limestone slabs. Today, some of them are renovated into boutique hotels and apartments for tourists.

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele

Passing through the Porta Napoli gate with two pillars, you enter the heart of the Centro Storico, the square Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. 

It was also known as the Piazza Castello (Castle Square). In the 14th century, there was a castle near the gate and on the place where today is the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (Chiesa dell’Addolorata). According to the story, in 1855, on the initiative of the priest, the old castle was destroyed to erase the memory of the numerous injustices and crimes that had been committed in the castle’s cellars. The church was completed in 1858.

Tourist office, a little cafe, restaurants, and an interesting ceramic shop can be found on this square. Also, there is an ancient limestone wall with an arch and a small shrine with a statue of the Madonna.

On the other side of the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, you can see the stunning Palazzo Aprile-Ximenes.
It was built in the 19th century, and it was completely painted in the Pompeian red colour.

Near the palace, there is a popular restaurant, Trattoria Al Vecchio Arco.

The Town Hall and Clocktower – Palazzo Comunale e Torre Civica

Behind the red Palazzo Aprile-Ximens, you can see the Town Hall with the Civic Tower.
Originally, Palazzo Comunale dates back to the 18th century. It served as both the municipality and the university, but now, it houses the Civic Library and the Historical Archive of Locorotondo. Also, various official ceremonies, art and cultural events are held there.

The white Civic Tower was built in the early 19th century, and it is 22 meters high. Once it served as a watchtower. Interestingly, the clock was added to the tower in 1820. Originally, it was mounted on the bell tower of the church Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire.

Palazzo Morelli

The impressive Palazzo Morelli was built in Baroque style in 1819, as a noble residence of the governor Morelli. He had an important role in the political and social life of Locorotondo.

The portal is interestingly carved, with the Morelli family coat of arms. The white palace still looks stunning, with ornate windows and wrought iron balconies with flowers.

I think that the palace is not open to the public now, because it is divided into private apartments.

The most famous Churches

The Church of Saint George Martyr – Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire

Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire is the main church of Locorotondo. It is dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of the city. Every year, Locorotondo celebrates San Giorgio on the 22nd and 23rd of April.

This church was built in the Neoclassical style between 1790 and 1825, on the site of two earlier churches. Interestingly, the houses were built in a circular shape around the church, according to the documents from 1195, when the first church was built. The second reconstruction was in 1579, and the church foundation can be seen today, thanks to the positioning of slabs of glass on the floor.

The central dome of the church is 35 meters high. On the left side, there is the chapel of Santissimo Sacramento, adorned with biblical scenes on 42 frames, from the previous church. There is a large painting of the Last Supper from 1841 inside the chapel.

La Madonna della Greca is the oldest church in Locorotondo, dating back to the 7th century. It was reconstructed in 1481, on the initiative of Pirro Orsini del Balzo, the prince of Taranto. The church has the Greek name; it is supposed that the Greek Orthodox cult was present there. During the medieval era, it became a Catholic church.

The facade is decorated with a stone rose window made in the 20th century. It was a reproduction of the destroyed medieval rosette. At the top corners of the facade, there are the statues of Saints Peter and Paul.

Church – Chiesa di San Rocco

Chiesa di San Rocco is dedicated to San Rocco. It is the second patron saint of Locorotondo, because the people believed that San Rocco saved them from the plague in 1690-91.
San Rocco is celebrated on August 16th. It is a major event in town, with a procession, music, and fireworks.

Park – The Villa Comunale 

Across the Porta Napoli and the Vittorio Emanuele Square, you can relax in the Villa Comunale.
It is a small public park at the edge of the old town, built in the mid-1800s. The park is a popular place both for locals and tourists, perfect for taking a break and enjoying delicious gelato on hot summer days.

In the centre of the park, there is an impressive monument, dedicated to the fallen people of all the wars (Monumento Ai Caduti).

From the park and Belvedere, there is a fantastic panoramic view of the Itria Valley, trulli, olives and vineyards.

Via Nardelli

Close to the park Villa Comunale, there is another great spot to see the valley. It is the street of Via Nardelli, which runs alongside the circular border of the historical centre. It is also known as Lungomare, even though the sea is not close (this term is used for the road that goes parallel to the sea).

There are several bars and restaurants, perfect for enjoying the sunset, wine and Puglian dishes.

Accommodation in Locorotondo

Usually, Locorotondo is not as crowded as Alberobello. But it can be a good choice for a base to stroll around the Puglia region.

By the way, there are no big hotels in the town. You can stay in restored houses “Le Cummerse” in the historic centre, and choose apartments or boutique hotels, which include a bed and breakfast.
Another option is the trulli, unique whitewashed houses with conical roofs, which are specific to Alberobello and the Valle d’Itria region.

Also, you can stay in masseries, renovated fortified farmhouses located around the town. They are perfect for a calm and relaxing vacation. Some of them have luxurious rooms, a spa, a pool and a restaurant. By the way, many celebrities (especially from the USA and the UK) bought masseries, for vacation or as an investment.

 Food & Drink

Although Locorotondo is a small town, it offers a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants.

Try traditional cheeses and dishes of Puglian cuisine, such as pasta (orrecchiete are the most popular in Puglia), or bombette (stuffed meat rolls). Some of the most popular restaurants are: Osteria Il Rosone, Controra, Goodo, Trattoria Al Vecchio Arco, Ai Tre Santi, 20 M2, Pizzeria Casa Pinto, Bit Sit, etc.

Taste excellent Puglian wines in wine bars, such as Pavi, or Vinifera Vini & Affini.

And various gelato, granite and espresso freddo (cold espresso coffee) will be the perfect refreshment on hot summer days.

I am sure that you are familiar with photos of Trulli, small whitewashed houses with grey conical roofs, surrounded by flowers.
Due to its unique architecture and ancient building techniques, the Trulli of Alberobello were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.

By the way, Alberobello means “a beautiful tree”.
Also, it is one of “I Borghi più belli d’Italia” (“The most beautiful villages of Italy”).

How to come to Alberobello

Alberobello is situated in the Itria Valley that belongs to the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia, in southern Italy.
There are several ways to reach it, depending on your departure point.

By car
The best and most comfortable way to come to Alberobello is by car. You can enter the town by road from the nearby towns, such as Locorotondo, Putignano, and Noci. Check here for several public and private parking lots in Alberobello.

◊ By bus
You can take Flixbus and Marino bus lines from various towns in almost the whole of Italy. All bus lines stop in Via Cavour in Alberobello.

By train
You can reach Alberobello by train from Bari with the Ferrovie del Sud Est trains, on the Bari-Taranto line.

◊ By air
The nearest airports are Bari and Brindisi. From there, you have to rent a car, or take a bus or train to Alberobello.

A few words about the history

Generally, the Itria Valley is known for the trulli, but most of them are situated in Alberobello.

The town was founded at the end of the 14th century. The Count of Conversano, Andrea Matteo III Acquaviva d’Aragona, the owner of the territory, allowed forty peasant families to cultivate the land, with the obligation to give him a part of the crops.

According to the law of the Kingdom of Naples, all villages with permanent structures have to pay a tax. To avoid payment, the houses were built in a way that allowed for easy demolition in the case of an inspection. And that is how the trulli were made. First, it was only 40 trulli, and the settlement was expanded in 1620. According to the decision of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, King of Naples, all taxes and feudal servitude were cancelled in 1797, and the town got the status of a royal city.

And the trulli… they have survived even today

The trulli of Alberobello

The trulli are rounded whitewashed houses with conical roofs made from stacked stones, without mortar. They represent a dry-stone building tradition, with the self-supporting domes. Originally, they were built as temporary field shelters and storehouses. But, over time, they became permanent dwellings for agricultural families and labourers.

The walls are completely made of limestone and slate. Their thickness is perfectly balanced to ensure optimal warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Originally, the roofs were white, but they became black from the sun over the years.

Trulli in Alberobello

Today, there are about 1.600 trulli in Alberobello. Most of them are transformed into local shops, bars, gelateries, and restaurants. In some of them, people are still living, while others are renting to tourists. There are around 10.237 inhabitants (2022) in the town.

The decorative pinnacles adorn the top of trulli roofs. They are painted with white symbols that have various religious or astrological meanings. Their role is to ward off demons and bring good luck to the inhabitants.

What to see in Alberobello in one day

Alberobello is a charming maze of narrow cobblestone streets with white houses and colourful flowers, just like in a fairy tale.
Generally, half a day is enough to see it. You can combine it with visiting other nearby towns or villages, or you can stay and sleep in trulli.

The two main districts of the town are Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola.
We started our tour walking Via Indipendenza Street, and we came to the Square of Largo Martellota.

The central square of Alberobello is the Largo Martellotta. It is the best spot to start exploring this unique place.

Largo Martellota is surrounded by trulli, cafes, small restaurants and local artisans’ shops. Usually, it is a place where various events and festivals are held.

On the right side of the square, the stairs lead to the Church of Saint Lucia and the Belvedere of Santa Lucia. It is also known as the Belvedere of Alberobello.

The largest and most famous district is Rione Monti, with about a thousand trulli.
It is located on the southern side of the city.

First, we walked into the Via Monte Nero, which looks like a postcard.

In Rione Monti, you can find local shops selling various souvenirs and handmade crafts.

There was an interesting message on one of the trulli walls:
“Prendimi la mano e raccontami… che niente è impossibile.”
It means: “Take my hand and tell me… that nothing is impossible”. Hmm, think about it

One of the oldest trulli is the Siamese Trulli.
It is the only double trulli building in the town, with two domes and two entrances.
According to legend, these trulli symbolise the story of love, betrayal and hate. Two brothers fell in love with the same woman. She was promised to the elder brother, but she fell in love with the younger brother… Becaouse of this love triangle, the trullo was divided into two parts.

Via Monte San Michele

Via Monte San Michele is named after the Archangel Michael. It is also filled with small shops and trulli.

Some shops or bars have a terrace, which is used only by customers. We bought a trulli magnet in a souvenir shop, and we were pleasantly surprised when the kind lady-owner invited us to climb the stairs to her terrace.

From there, there is a fantastic view of Rione Monti and the trulli marked with white symbols.

One of the most interesting spots is Il Bar Trulletto.
If you want to spice up your life a little, the owner, Enzo Palmisano, will prepare a special Caffè al Peperoncino for you. You can enjoy this coffee with a hint of chilli on their panoramic rooftop terrace.

Besides the spiced coffee, you can try Caffè alla Mandorla (Almond Coffee) or cocktails. Also, you can buy their local products, such as Homemade Chilli Jam, Peperoncello Liqueur, pepperoncini, cheese, local salami, and pepperoncini souvenirs, as well.

At one of the corners of Via Monte San Michele, you can find an interesting passage known as the Vicolo del Antonella or Vicolo Fiorito. Just make a wish and take a photo, surrounded by white trulli walls and red flowers

Take a walk along the Via Brigata Regina street, near Largo Martellota square.

It was interesting to take a walk along the small street, filled with shops, bars and local food, looking at the colourful hats hanging above our heads.

So, on the right side of the street, you can see a yellow Belvedere sign. Pass through the open doorway and follow the path through the park, Villa Comunale Belvedere Parco. From there, you can see the Rione Monti.

Close to it, there is another interesting doorway, known as the Door View, with a fantastic view of the trulli.

Rione Aia Piccola

In a short distance from the east of Rione Monti, you can find the Rione Aia Piccola.

It is a much smaller and calmer district, with around 500 trulli. Today, it is exclusively a residential area, without shops or bars.
There, you can find boutique hotels and apartments situated in small trulli as well.

◊ Casa Dell’Amore had a huge impact on the history of the town. Actually, it was the first house built with mortar in 1797 in Alberobello. The house got its name after its owner, Francesco D’Amore.

◊ The Trullo Sovrano is the only two-storey trullo in the city. It was also built in 1797, as one of the first trulli made with mortar. Today, it houses a Museum with the original furniture from the early 20th century. The admission fee is 2 EUR.

The Museum of the territory “House Pezzolla” is a complex of 15 interconnected trulli. Once, it was the house of the doctor Giacomo Pezzolla. Today it is the City Museum, dedicated to the history, culture and agriculture of Alberobello.

Close to the museum, there is Casa Lippolis, which owes its name to Vitonofrio Lippolis. He was the first archpriest, and he built this house at the end of the 18th century as his private residence.

Churches in Alberobello

Well, it is not surprising that one church is situated in a trullo building!

It is the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua (Parrocchia Sant’Antonio di Padova), located at the top of the Hill of Rione Monte. The church was built in 1927. The trullo cone replaced a traditional dome. The interior of the church is simple, with a large fresco above the altar, painted by the famous Apulian artist Adolfo Rollo.

The Basilica of Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano is located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. It dominates the town with its twin bell towers. The basilica was built in 1782, in the neo-Renaissance style. Santa Cosma is the patron of the town. Every year, on the 26th and 27th of September, Alberobello celebrates the feast of Saints Cosma and Damia, with numerous pilgrims.

The Church of Santa Lucia is located close to the Largo Marcellota, in Piazza Gian Girolamo II D’Acquaviva D’Aragona. It was built in 1823, and it is dedicated to Santa Lucia. Her relics were brought into the church in 1904 from Venice. Near the church, there is the Belvedere Santa Lucia and a small fountain.

As I have mentioned before, in almost every alley of the Rione Monti, you can find small shops in trulli.
You can buy magnets, various crafts made of wood, stone, ceramics, clothes and local food.

A few words about the Gargano Sea Caves

Gargano Sea Caves are situated on the southern coast of the Gargano peninsula, stretching between Vieste and Mattinata. There are about twenty caves that can be visited from the inside by small boat, larger motorboats, or kayak.

By the way, the Gargano Sea Caves were discovered in 1954 by Michele Trimigno, a fisherman from Vieste.
During the sea storm, he found refuge in the caves. So, he started to combine fishing and guiding a small number of visitors to the caves. Enrico Mattei, then president of ENI, was among them. Together with Cavaliere Trimigno in 1958, he decided to build a tourist complex in Pugnochiuso, marking the beginning of tourism development in the Gargano area.

We can say that Michele was the first who gave specific names to the caves.
Some of them are: Grotta Campana (Bell cave), Grotta Sfondata (Broken Cave), Grotta dei Contrabbandieri (Smugglers Cave), Grotta dei Due Occhi (Two Eyes Cave), Grotta dei Colombi (Dove Cave), Grotta delle Sirene (Mermaid Cave), or Grotta dei Sogni (The Dream Cave).

Today, Michele’s son, Graziano and grandson Francesco continue his work. Their famous company, Motorboat Desirèe, is organising tours of the Gargano Caves and to the nearby Tremiti Islands. 

What to know before you go on the Gargano boat tour

 When to go on a boat tour

The perfect period for the Gargano Sea Caves boat tour is the late spring and early autumn. The weather is nice, the sea is pretty calm, and there are fewer crowds. For sure, the exact days depend on sea conditions.
It is recommended to be at the boarding area of the port around 30 minutes before departure.

Practical Tips

Bring a hat or cap, sunscreen, and water. Some small boats have awnings, but there’s no shade on the bigger motorboats.
◊ Wear swimwear if the tour includes a beach stop for swimming.
Depending on the period, the sea breeze can be cool, so take a light jacket.
◊ Bring your camera or phone to capture stunning views of cliffs and caves.
If you have a problem with seasickness, bring some medicine, like Dramamine.

Where to buy tickets for the Gargano boat tour?

So, you can book a tour online, or you can buy tickets directly at the port of Vieste or nearby Peschici town.
Several companies offer daily departures. Some of the popular local operators are: Grotte Marine Gargano-Desirèe, Motobarche Leonarda, Vieste Grotte Tour, and Motobarca Adriatica.

If you come to Puglia with a travel agency, then the agency will buy the tickets for you.
Otherwise, check with your hotel in Vieste to help you with tickets and transfers.

Boat Tour Options

Boat tours to the Gargano Caves could be private or group tours.

Private tours are typically organised for groups of up to 6 people, in a small boat with a professional skipper.
It lasts around 3-4 hours and costs from 150 EUR or more for the whole group.

Group tours can last 2 or 3 hours, depending on whether the tour includes a swimming spot or not.
Typically, the departure times are from 9 AM to 12 PM, and from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM.
There is a multilingual guide on the tour, as well.
The ride costs around 25 EUR per person.
We went on a boat tour with the Motorbarche Leonarda, and it was very crowded (the end of June 2025).

Bear in mind that the large motorboats could not enter all caves.
So, if you can, take a private tour, and you will have a fantastic experience.

What to see during the boat tour around the Gargano Sea Caves

Our journey to the sea caves started at the commercial port of Vieste town in the morning.

Vieste coast and the Lighthouse

First, we passed by the Vieste Lighthouse, located on the islet of Santa Eufemia.
It was designed in 1867, and the tower is situated on the former lighthouse operator’s home. Today, it is completely automated and managed by the Lighthouse Zone Command of the Navy based in Venice.

Then, we passed by the old town of Vieste and a few trabuccos (wooden platforms used for fishing).

Near the Castello seafront (La Scialara), and at the end of the beach, you can see Pizzomunno, the white monolith.
There is an interesting love story between the fisherman Pizzomunno and the beautiful girl Cristalda, connected to this rock. But, I will talk about it in one of the posts about the town of Vieste

We continued our trip along the southern coast of the Gargano, passing by the Porto Nuovo beach,  hotel, and the Porto Nuovo rock, as well.

Arch of San Felice (Architiello di San Felice)

Even though the Arco di San Felice is not a cave, it is one of the most famous landmarks of the Gargano coast.
This natural rock arch looks magnificent!

The sea and wind made a huge hole – a window in the rock, with a fantastic view of the blue-turquoise sea and an Anti-Saracen tower – Torre San Felice, in the distance. This arch is one of the favourite stops for photo shooting during the boat tour.

Also, in the beautiful bay of San Felice, you can enjoy a wide beach with golden sand and long shallow water.

Close to the San Felice Bay, we passed in front of the Grotta dei Contrabbandieri or Smugglers’ Cave. It got its name because some smugglers escaped the Guardia di Finanza by crossing the cave itself.

Going further, you can see the “Testa del Gargano“, the rock on the most eastern point of the Gargano.

Grotta Campana – The Bell Cave

Close to the Arch San Felice, there is Grotta Campana or the Bell Cave.
The impressive rocks surround the entrance to the cave, and we had a feeling that we were going down into the cave!

It got its name from the impressive dome, which looks like a huge bell, and natural acoustics.

You can see the sunlight through the hole in the cave, creating a fantastic view of the stones, trees, and the blue sky. Well, this is one of the most famous caves on the Gargano coast.

We continued our journey to the next cave, Grotta dei Due Occhi. And this cave takes your breath away!

Two holes, similar to eyes, are situated on the ceiling of the cave. The wind and the sea made this unique cave, making space for the sunlight to pass through them. In a word, you have a feeling that someone is watching you

This interesting cave got its name after the red sea tomatoes. Actually, there are red sea molluscs that hang on the rocky walls.
But, they look like real pomodori – cherry tomatoes!

Arch of Porto Greco – Greek Door

We continued our boat trip, passing under a stone arch known as the Arch of Porto Greco, or the Greek Door.

It looks amazing, carved by the wind and sea, and it is a perfect spot for taking great photos.

After the Porto Greco, there are Grotta delle Viole, Grotta delle Sirene, and the bays of Pugnochiuso and Portopiatto, with the popular Pugnochiuso resort.

Also, you can see there the Pergola Tower, a lighthouse tower, located above a small and rocky inlet. It was built in the 16th century as part of the defensive system. But there is an interesting fact about it.
For the first time in history, its guardian was a woman, Maria Rita di Loreto. She was the only female lighthouse keeper in Italy, hired in 1976 by the Ministry of Defence. Maria lived for years next to the tower, but today, access is prohibited because it is a military zone.

Another fantastic cave is Grotta delle Due Stanze.
As the name says, this cave has two rooms, separated by one rocky archway.

We entered one room, then sailed slowly to another room, and left it, going out to the sea.

Grotta dei Sogni – The Cave of Dreams

Another magnificent cave is the Grotta dei Sogni, or the Dream Cave.

There is a small beach inside the cave. The reflection of water on the rocks makes an amazing view.
This cave is also known as the Grotta dei Innamorati, or the Cave of the Lovers.

Generally, the boat tour finishes with the view of the Baia delle Zagare, with its faraglioni, the specific rocks raised from the sea.

A boat trip is not complete without enjoying the beach

So, we stopped on the Vignanotica Bay, at the Vignanotica Beach. It is about 500 m long, with mixed sand and pebbles, surrounded by several small caves and white limestone cliffs.

The beach is partly organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, but there is a lot of free space to put your towels and umbrella. The water was refreshing and crystal clear, but it quickly descended to the depths.

There are two small canteens on the beach with refreshment drinks and snacks. The prices are a little bit higher than in Vieste (a freddo cappuccino 5 EUR, a sandwich 8 EUR, etc).

By the way, this beach is accessible via a curved road (from Vieste, about 45 minutes). From parking (10 EUR per day), you have to walk about 15 minutes down a steep path to the beach.

We were on the beach for about 45 minutes. Then, we returned to the port of Vieste, passing by the incredible Gargano sea caves and white cliffs, surrounded by trees.

We connected thanks to Zorica, my good friend and ex-teacher of the Italian language. This summer, during the terrible fires in Rhodes I saw one of the Zorica’s comments on the Meta (FB). Many years after our last meeting, we met in beautiful Rhodos and we went to dinner.

And soon after that, Zorica and I met again in Belgrade. At the same time, her cousin Suzana came from Italy with her husband Matteo.

We met at the cafe, and we talked about many things. I was fascinated by their life story and what they are doing now.
So take a look at what I asked Suzana about her program “Journey to Myself”.

When did you start to practice yoga?

Suzana:
My first contact with yoga came from the desire to find a physical activity that would help me strengthen my back muscles and heal the inflamed sciatic nerve. But after the first class, I realized that yoga offers us much more than a strong and elastic body.
Staying in positions creates a unique feeling of massaging all tissues and organs. In fact, continuous contact with the breath calms our nervous system, and after a yoga class, we often feel “like new”. We have created space in the body and energy flows freely giving us a feeling of physical and mental lightness.

That feeling kept me on the path of yoga, and the desire to bring it closer to other people led me to enrol and complete a yoga course for instructors at Dragan Lončar’s renowned Vidya yoga school. Practising yoga “brings us back to ourselves”. It leads us to reconsider our own beliefs by not being reactive to what is happening around us, but actively choosing and making decisions from a calm perspective, which is a consequence of the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system.

How do you decide to live in Italy?

Suzana:
Yoga helped me make necessary decisions that irrevocably changed my life by opening new doors. My husband Matteo, whom I met quite by chance on a trip, walked through one of them. The intuitive decision to move to Belgrade from Italy is a narrative we meet in romantic movies. But with great certainty, I can say that we recognized each other and that our souls have known each other for much longer.

After seven months of living in Belgrade and completing the course for yoga instructors, we wanted to create and grow far from the metropolis. The site of Frontona at the foot of Mount Catria in the centre of Italy was a logical choice since Matteo’s family already owned a restored house and a small B&B business. Just 200 meters from that house, we found a space that met all our needs and could fulfil all our dreams.

So, after two years of restoration, a lot of effort, attention to detail, patience and support, our vision has materialized. We are now enthusiastically living all the possibilities it offers us. We have created a place where people feel supported, tucked away and free, a place where they can be in direct contact with nature and themselves. It is a place where they can awaken their creativity and strength by choosing the contents we offer them: Ai Piedi del Catria.

So how do you get to an idea to prepare a program „Journey to Myself”,
and what it is about?

Suzana:
The yoga retreat program „Journey to Myself“  is a program primarily designed for deep mental and physical relaxation.

We wanted to create a vacation that not only energizes us with energy and brings us back refreshed to routine, work and family, but also an opportunity for regular practitioners to deepen their practice. Also, it is a program for beginners to discover a method that improves their physical, mental and emotional health and to include it in their everyday life.

“Journey to Myself” includes visiting natural mountain beauties, walking and swimming in crystal clear rivers, visiting coastal towns and swimming in the Adriatic Sea. Also, we discover together Renaissance gems under UNESCO protection and taste one of the most delicious cuisines in the world.

Your husband Matteo travelled a lot, and he likes the music, right…

Yes, Matteo has been travelling for many years, staying for several months in countries such as India, Nepal, Thailand, Peru and Japan. From an early age, he loved music and folk instruments. In his private collection of ethnic instruments, he also has instruments that are used for meditative purposes, so he actively contributes to yoga classes in the final, relaxation part of the class.

By the way, Matteo also studied the traditional technique of Thai fruit and vegetable carving from the greatest masters in Thailand. As a certified teacher, he now teaches people this beautiful, artistic skill.

How important it is to “return to ourselves”,
to listen to what the inner voice that we often ignore, tells us?

There is nothing more beautiful than being who we are. But, we often feel disconnected from our bodies and emotions, entangled in a ball of thoughts that we recycle over and over again.

When I talk about how the practice of yoga can help us to know our essence and true nature, I speak exclusively from my own experience. I share only what I have experienced and what I deeply believe. The physical aspect of yoga, the postures (asanas) we practice, teaches us to listen to our body and recognize what it needs and how to provide it.

Also, yoga teaches us to accept our body, its anatomical limitations and differences, and to take care of it while feeling grateful for everything it enables us to do. It is very motivating when we feel how our body changes, how it becomes stronger, more flexible, and lighter, and we can feel this at every age of our adult life.

Is there any particular time when we can start practising yoga?

Suzana:
It is not too late to start this practice even when we are mature. Our body is the most intelligent machine that exists in the universe and yoga helps us realize that. When we focus on our breath and practice yogic breathing exercises, we are actively changing our awareness and perception by staying in the present. A ball of thoughts that are focused on the past and the future just unravels. “When the heartaches, the thought is to blame.”

In one of Milan Rakić’s song, we recognize the main culprit for unpleasant emotions, which we try to escape in various ways. Yoga teaches us to bear witness to them, not to identify with them. It teaches us that we are also woven from that subtle layer, but that in our essence we are not those emotions. Yoga introduces the concept of santosha, fulfilment and self-sufficiency into our lives.

I would go a step further and say that yoga brings peace into our everyday life

You mentioned to me that you are preparing a special program for the new year.
What does the New Year’s “Yoga Retreat” look like?

Suzana:

 What can be visited more near your apartments?

Suzana:
The municipality of Frontone (1,360 inhabitants) is located in the district of Pesaro, at the foot of the Catria massif, whose main peak is Monte Catria (1,701 m). It is characterized by a healthy and mild climate throughout the year, with valleys and green hills ideal for walks and excursions.
Nearby is the Monastery of Fonte Avellana, an important 10th-century abbey famous for hosting historical figures such as Dante, who recalls his stay in the monastery in his Divine Comedy.

Our ideal location provides an outstanding blend of mountain and sea activities. In addition to walking and swimming in the mountain rivers, the beaches of the Adriatic Sea are close by, near the Konero Natural Park.

And nearby is another interesting tourist attraction: Urbino, one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities and the birthplace of Raphael, the famous Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance.

And how we can get to your place and Frontone? 

Suzana:
Depending on the transport you choose, the airports in Bologna and Rome are available, from where you can reach the city of Marota by train. There is organized car transport from Marota to Frontone. It is also possible to arrive by bus. From Serbia, the Fudex agency transports passengers to Bologna, from where you can take a train to the mentioned town of Marota. If you decide to come by car, the distance between Belgrade and Frontone is 1,100 km.

Journey to myself: Keep calm, and find your way to be healthy and happy

The best periods to visit the island are in spring and summer, because of the weather and absence of fog.
We visited the island in August. It was a cloudy and hot day, but despite the clouds, the view of the tiny houses painted in different colours was stunning!

And we didn’t know where to look or what to photograph first!

History of Burano

The settlement of Burano was founded in the 6^th century by some inhabitants of the Roman city of Altino, during the Barbarian invasions. There are a few stories about its name. One is that the Altino inhabitants named it ”Burano” from “Porta Boreana” because it is located in the northeast, the direction from which the wind blows. Another story says that the Buriana family initially founded it. And there is a story that the first inhabitants came from the small island of Buranello, about 8 kilometres (5 miles) to the south, as well.

The first houses were made of cane and mud and then of bricks, around 1000 A.D. After that, Burano lost its autonomy and became a part of the Republic of Venice. The people were engaged in fishing and agriculture. In the 16^th century, lace was produced until the late 18^th century, when the industry died out. This period is known as the “golden age” of Burano history.

Today, about 2800 inhabitants live on the island. It belongs administratively to Venice, together with the other islands in the Venetian lagoon.

As you approach the island, from the boat, you can see small colourful houses.

According to the legend, the island’s fishermen were the first who paint their houses in bright colours. The reason was simple: it helped them to recognise their houses when they were coming back from fishing, especially through the fog!

So, today, if you live in Burano and want to paint your house, first you have to send a letter to the government with a request. They will reply and tell you what colours you can use to paint your house!

What to see on Burano Island

Originally, Burano consisted of five islands and four canals. But the fourth canal was filled and became a square: Piazza Baldassare Galuppi. These islands represent districts or ”sestieri”: San Martino Destro, San Martino Sinistro, San Mauro, Giudecca, and Terranova. The sixth sestiere is neighbouring Mazzorbo, today linked by a small bridge.

The colourful houses

The centre of the island is the main square, Piazza Galuppi. There you can find a church, the Leaning Tower, and the Lace Museum. And of course, the tiny houses are everywhere, all painted in different colours!

The Church of St. Martin Bishop and the Leaning Tower

The Church of St. Martin Bishop (Chiesa di San Martino) was built in the 16^th century. In this Roman-Catholic church was the painting “Crucifixion” by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the great Italian painter of the 18^th century. This painting and some other works have been transferred to the Santa Barbara Oratory located near the church.

Behind the church, you can see the leaning tower. Well, it is not like the famous tower in Pisa, but because of subsidence, it is inclined 1.83 meters in relation to its axis. The tower was built between 1703 and 1714 and is attributed to the famous Italian architect Andrea Tirali. It has a square shape and elements of Renaissance and neoclassical architecture. The bell tower is 53 meters high, and you can see it from every part of the island.

In the middle of the square, there is a statue dedicated to Baldassare Galuppi. He was a composer, born in Burano in 1706. According to The Musical Times (an academic journal of classical music), Galuppi, with his 109 operas, was the sixth most prolific opera composer. The main square on the island is named in his honour.

On Gallupi Square, there is an original well from 1588, still flowing with fresh water. Also, there is an ancient step in Istrian stone from the 18^th century in the yard, from which once the flag “Gonfalone of St. Mark” was flying, representing the two protecting Saints of the Island, St. Martin and St. Albano.

There are fish restaurants, bars, a few bakeries, and shops around Galuppi Square.

The Lace Museum

The Lace Museum is located in the former seat of the famous Burano Lace School, in a Gothic palace of the Podestà of Torcello.

In 1978, the public administration of Venice (the Town Council, Provincial Authorities, Chamber of Commerce, and Tourist Boards) joined together with the Andriana Marcello Foundation in a “Consortium for Burano Lace”. Their mission was to revive and preserve the Burano lace tradition.

The Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto) is open from 10 am to 6 pm (5 pm in winter). It is closed on Monday, and the entrance fee is 5€ per adult. The museum is small, but you can learn more about lace history from its origins to the present day. Here you can see the rare and precious lace pieces and clothes as well.

So, Lace Merletto, pizza, and trina are synonyms for lace. Without any textile support, by combining stitch upon stitch with a needle using special techniques, the Burano lace is still a masterpiece in Italian craft tradition.

The story about the Burano Lace

Since the 15^th century, the women from Burano have engaged in making beautiful, hand-lace pieces. In the 16^th century, lace was made with needles, and soon the lace was exported across Europe. However, the trade began to decline in the 18^th century, and the industry did not revive until 1872 when a school of lace-making was opened.

 And the lace-making on the island boomed again for nearly 100 years, imitating 17th-century Venetian needle laces and developing a typical Burano form worked in a slightly brown cotton thread. But in 1970, the school was forced to close due to the competition from cheaper imported laces from Asia.

Well, lace-making requires a lot of time and patience. In the past, women used the threads of superfine linen, but also of silk, gold and silver, and since the 20^th century, cotton in particular. The main technique typologies are needles and bobbins.

Usually, for lace creation, more than five steps are necessary, which still involve five persons. Every lacemaker is assigned to the step which she is good at (even if she knows all the stitches). So every piece of lace made this way is expensive. Almost every shop on the island sells lace products. But, if you find lace at a much lower price, you have to know that it is not the original lace.

Of course, there is one romantic tale about the Burano lace…

According to the legend, the sirens tried to seduce an engaged fisherman with their sweet song. But he declined the sirens because of his beloved girlfriend, who was waiting for him on the island. As a sign of respect, the sirens created foam in the water and transformed it into a wedding veil for his fiancée.

Envious of the veil, the women in the village tried to copy it with delicate needlework. They made the beautiful art of lace for wedding veils and dresses. And this is the story of how the famous Burano lace was made.

It was a very pleasant feeling walking through the narrow streets of Burano.

In lines, you can see the houses painted in different shades of red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and violet.

Almost everywhere you can see flowers. The laundry is hanging on the windows and between the houses as well.

One of the most photographed places in Burano is the wooden bridge, known as Three Bridges (Tre Ponti).

And when you get tired of walking, take a break. Have lunch in small fish restaurants.

Drink a cappuccino in a bar. Taste typical biscuit Bussola, in a pasticceria (Italian bakery), made on the island. It is a doughnut-shaped cake, also known as buranelli. Some of these cookies have an “S” shape, and they are called Burano’s essi.

How to get to Burano

The easiest way to Burano is from Venice. The distance is about 7 kilometres (4 miles) and it is a 40-minute trip by a Venetian water bus, vaporetto. The LN line Vaporetti is available in Venice from Tre Ponti, Punto Sabbioni, and Fondamente Nuove.

Also, there are guided tours from Venice, like a half-day excursion. The boat-trip tour includes a visit to Burano, Murano, and Torcello, and the starting point is close to St Mark’s Square. The price is € 25, but there are various tours to explore.

There is a possibility to take a hop-on hop-off tour from Venice,  if you want to be more flexible and visit these islands, as well. The ticket price is € 20 per adult, and the validity is 24 hours. It starts from the moment you get on board and finishes the following day at the same time.
